When you think of a tiny person playing a string instrument, you probably think of the violin. Or maybe a microscopic cello? What about a tiny double bass?! Bigger than adults at its full size, the double bass simply isn't the first instrument we may associate with early Suzuki education, but Dr. Kate Jones is painting a new picture of possibility for the world of bassists.
When it comes to the bass, one has to dream BIG.
Spearheaded by Suzuki Program Director Stacy Smith and the administration at Gifted Music School, a new Suzuki Bass program is being pioneered, not only for those bassists in the Utah area or even the nation, but for anyone all over the world. “We can do a lot using the school as a platform to create a bass hub," Dr. Jones said. Gifted Music School is the first official Suzuki School to offer online Bass Teacher Training and Suzuki Bass Group Classes, tailored to both young Suzuki bass students and teachers.
Where 99% of our student reach prior to the pandemic was locally based, we now have student registrations pouring in from every corner of the country and world. “I think that Gifted Music School could be an international Suzuki school! The possibilities have opened up!” Dr. Jones enthusiastically said, mentioning that she saw student bass players joining the Suzuki Bass Group Class last week from countries such as Australia, England, Spain, and even Guatemala.
