Music Theory Department Chair Honored by the University of Utah

Outstanding Music Lessons in Salt Lake City, UT

Each year, the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah recognizes two outstanding faculty members for their contributions in teaching and research. We are thrilled to share that GMS Music Theory Department Chair, Dr. Michael Chikinda, has been selected as the 2023 Faculty Excellence Award Winner in the category of Teaching Excellence.

The Teaching Excellence Award recognizes a colleague who has exemplary contributions to the educational process inside and outside the classroom, with innovative teaching practices and admirable mentorships, as well as who puts tremendous effort into developing the curriculum in their unit. According to his nominator, Michael is a “Master of Teaching;” he is a popular, hands-on professor who knows how to create a safe and engaging learning environment in his classrooms. His teaching methods are multi-modal, participatory, and immersive. He developed beautiful systems for teaching during the COVID shutdown and continually familiarizes himself with the latest trends in music theory, always actively promoting the sense of a unified purpose for learning among students, faculty, and TAs.

Congratulations, Dr. Chikinda, on this prestigous award!
