Professional Affiliations and Activities

Derek Myler completed his MM in Music Theory at the University of Utah in 2018. His thesis, “A Schenkerian View of Ascending Lines and Prolongation in the Fugal Expositions of J.S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier” was supervised by Dr. Michael Chikinda. His research focuses on Schenkerian perspectives in the analysis of fugue, as well as on the music of Charles Ives. 

Derek teaches as an Associate Instructor of Music Theory in the School of Music at the University of Utah. He is also a member of SMT (Society for Music Theory) and has presented his research at conferences in Madison, WI, in Seattle, WA, and in Provo, UT. Additionally, he is active as a music director and conductor for northern Utah theatres, as a vocalist and vocal coach, as a collaborative pianist, and as an frequent adjudicator. An occasional composer, Derek’s works have been premiered in the United States and Europe, and recent choral music is published by Walton Music.
