JOB SUMMARY

Gifted Music School seeks an experienced and engaging double bass instructor to join the String Area Faculty at Gifted Music School in Salt Lake City, UT. The teaching artist would be expected to join a serious teaching team committed to raising, nurturing, and coaching students of all ages and backgrounds.
 
The Double Bass Instructor reports to the String Department Chair and will work in close cooperation with the Suzuki Program Director, Dean, and Artistic Director, as well as other members of the team. The instructor's primary role is to provide applied double bass lessons on a weekly basis.
 
Specific responsibilities for the Double Bass Instructor will include, but are not limited to:
  • Teach individual lessons to double bass students beginning through advanced levels ages 5+. Provide each student a minimum of 38 lessons per school year (15 in the fall, 17 in the spring, and a minimum of 6 lessons in the summer), adhering to the school calendar
  • Hold one (1) studio recital each fall and spring semester
  • Prepare students for and adjudicate at Jury Examinations
  • Actively recruit and maintain a studio of double bass students at Gifted Music School
  • Assist students with recording sessions for auditions, competitions, etc.
  • Coordinate with colleagues across campus (e.g. Chamber Music Coordinator, Choir Director, Conservatory Manager, etc.) and encourage students to audition or apply for classes and performance opportunities as appropriate
  • Conference with parents and students to address problems or provide counseling on students' musical development
  • Perform administrative tasks associated with students’ attendance, scheduling, and communications
  • Report to the department chair and attend, assist, and contribute to school and departmental events
  • Perform other related duties as requested by the department chair or Suzuki Program Director
Hourly wage is commensurate with experience. The hours for this position are negotiable and may vary depending on instructor availability and student demand. Eligible for health and dental benefits if workload reaches or exceeds 30 hours per week.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in double bass performance or related field
  • Demonstrated evidence of effective teaching, beginning through advanced levels - minimum of 3 years experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated English proficiency; Spanish or other language would be a strong asset.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above

 

PREFERENCES

In particular, we are looking for candidates with:
  • Advanced degrees in music (MM, MMA, or DMA) with significant experience in teaching double bass
  • SAA-registered Suzuki Teacher Training and membership in the Suzuki Association of the Americas
  • Experience in teaching classical bass; jazz bass would be a strong asset as well
  • An active teaching career and interest in making teaching activities at Gifted Music School a career priority
  • Commitment to maintaining a reliable schedule and adhering to the school calendar
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to contribute to a high-performance team environment while being supportive of colleagues, staff, parents, and students.
  • A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the studio and meeting the needs of a diverse population
  • A strong understanding of the value of comprehensive music instruction
Familiarity with Gifted Music School’s policies and procedures, as well as the school’s systems (i.e. My Music Staff) is preferred but not required.
